Tony Stoltzfus says “Believing in people doesn’t work at the superficial level”. Coaching is about believing people’s dreams, goals and vision for their life while walking alongside them helping them to envision a greater and better future for themselves. Relationships thrive off of trust and security. Collins reiterates this throughout the chapter. I truly resonated with coaching as leadership. As a supervisor and coach, it is often a challenge balancing the two in a way that promotes growth and excellence. I took away from this reading that coaching and leadership go together. I do not have to separate the two.
“Coaching is an alliance between two equals”. This resonated with me as it is a very different approach from other helping professionals who are typically seen as the expert in the conversation/room. Coaching is about affirming the client they are themselves the expert of their own life. Coaching is a partnership with a purpose, a team effort and may be met with resistance. Don’t run from resistance, acknowledge and address it. As coaches we are there to assist people in navigating their ever changing lives and the lives around them. Change can be challenging and coaching is a great tool to help people cope with the process. Don’t assume that coaching is for everyone. Assess to ensure that the client is free from psychological issues before coaching may begin.
